How to Plan a Tattoo Flash Day: A Checklist for Any Occasion
A tattoo flash day is a set day when a studio tattoos pre-drawn designs from a flash sheet at fixed prices, often with walk-ins welcome. To run a good one, start 3 to 4 weeks ahead: draw the sheet, set one price per size, choose walk-ins or booked slots, and run local ads in the final week. The day itself pays for itself; the follow-up turns flash clients into custom bookings.
Flash days work for almost any occasion: Halloween, Friday the 13th, Valentine's Day, a studio anniversary or a charity day. The planning is the same every time, so this is the checklist we use, with links to our guides for specific dates. For more ways to bring in clients, see tattoo advertising ideas.
What a flash day is (and why studios run them)
- For clients: a low-risk way to get a small tattoo from an artist they like, at a known price, without a custom consultation.
- For the studio: a full day, lots of new local clients, content for social media, and a list of people who may come back for bigger work.
The flash day checklist
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 4 weeks before | Pick the date and theme; each artist draws their part of the sheet; set prices and the deposit rule |
| 3 weeks before | Decide walk-ins, booked slots or both; set up the booking link; order supplies |
| 2 weeks before | Post the flash sheet, pin it, save it as a highlight; tell past clients |
| 1 week before | Start local ads; post which designs are still available every 2 to 3 days |
| Day before | Final reminder; confirm staff, stations and pre-cut stencils |
| On the day | Queue system, live wait times in stories, film the day for next time |
| Week after | Message every client with a photo of their piece and your custom-booking link |
Pricing and deposits
Set one price per size, not per design, so nobody has to ask. Keep pieces small (roughly 2 to 3 inches) so each takes well under an hour. There is no standard flash price; set yours from what a small piece costs you in time and materials.
For booked slots, take a deposit that comes off the price. It stops no-shows and keeps your artists busy from the first hour. Use our deposit policy template for the wording.
Walk-ins or booked slots
| Walk-ins | Booked slots | |
|---|---|---|
| Easy to run | Yes | Needs a booking link |
| No-shows | None | Low with a deposit |
| Quiet morning risk | High | Low |
| Crowd at the door | Possible | Controlled |
Many studios book the morning and keep the afternoon for walk-ins.
How to promote it
- Your own channels: pin the sheet, post stories every few days, message past clients.
- Local ads: people within about 15 to 25 miles, a short video that opens on the sheet and finished pieces, objective set to messages. Most of the budget in the last 4 to 5 days. See Meta ads for tattoo artists for the set-up.
- Partner businesses: barbers, vintage shops and cafes nearby can share the sheet or keep a small stack of cards (see our business card ideas).
Flash day occasions for the next 12 months
| Date | Occasion | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, October 31, 2026 | Halloween | Halloween tattoo flash |
| Friday, November 13, 2026 | Friday the 13th | Friday the 13th tattoo flash |
| Friday, November 27, 2026 | Black Friday (gift certificates, not discounts) | Tattoo gift certificates |
| Sunday, February 14, 2027 | Valentine's Day (matching and couples' flash) | Coming soon |
| Wednesday, March 17, 2027 | St. Patrick's Day | |
| Friday, August 13, 2027 | Friday the 13th | Friday the 13th tattoo flash |
Your studio's anniversary is also a great flash day: it gives past clients a reason to come back.
Charity flash days
Some studios dedicate a flash day to a local cause and donate part of the takings. It brings in people who would not otherwise visit, gives local news and the charity a reason to share it, and often earns links and mentions for the studio. Agree the donation and the cause's logo use in writing first.
After the day
The flash day is the start, not the finish:
- Collect contact details and consent at check-in.
- Within a week, send each client a photo of their piece and your custom-booking link.
- Invite them to the next flash day.
- Keep the best clips; they are ready-made ads for next time.
FAQ
What are flash tattoo events?
A flash tattoo event, or flash day, is a day when a studio offers pre-drawn designs from a flash sheet at set prices, often first come, first served. Clients pick a design instead of ordering custom artwork.
How much should a flash tattoo cost?
There is no standard price. Studios usually set one price per size that covers the artist's time and materials for a small piece. Check the studio's flash sheet for its prices.
How much should I tip on a flash tattoo?
Tipping is common in US tattoo studios, and many clients tip a percentage of the price, as they would for other personal services. It is up to you; the artist will not expect more on a flash day than on any other.
How far ahead should a studio plan a flash day?
About 3 to 4 weeks: two weeks to draw and price the sheet, and two weeks to promote it, with local ads in the final week.
