Tattoo Gift Certificates: How Studios Sell More for Black Friday and the Holidays
Tattoo gift certificates are the easiest extra revenue a studio can add in November and December: people want to give tattoos but do not know the design, size or artist. Sell them online in fixed amounts, print clear terms on each one, promote them from Black Friday (November 27, 2026) to Christmas, and treat every certificate as a future booking you need to chase.
In the US, "tattoo gift certificate" and "tattoo gift card" are searched about 750 times a month combined (Ahrefs). Most of the pages that rank are single studios' shop pages and template sites. There is room for a studio that makes buying one simple.

Why they are worth it
- Money in during your slowest weeks. November and December are quiet for many studios; certificates bring revenue now for sessions in January and February.
- New clients you did not pay to find. The buyer is usually a fan of your work; the recipient is often someone who has never been to your studio.
- Bigger first sessions. Recipients often add their own money on top of the certificate for a larger piece.
Amounts that work
Match the amounts to what things actually cost in your studio, so the certificate covers something real.
| Amount | What it should cover | Who buys it |
|---|---|---|
| Your shop minimum | One small piece or a flash design | Friends, stocking fillers |
| About one hour of your rate | A small custom piece | Partners, close friends |
| A half-day session | A medium custom piece | Partners, milestone birthdays |
| Custom amount | Whatever the buyer chooses | Anyone who already knows the plan |
A certificate that does not cover even a small tattoo disappoints the person who receives it. Start at your minimum, not below.
What to print on each certificate
Keep the front beautiful (a piece of flash or your logo) and the back clear. Use wording like this:
[Studio name] gift certificate
Value: $[amount] No. [number]
Good toward any tattoo at [studio name], [city].
To book, scan the code or visit [booking link] and enter
this certificate number. It can be used toward your deposit.
Not redeemable for cash. Valid until [date, at least 5 years
from purchase]. Lost certificates can be replaced with the number.
Expiration: check the rule first. Under US federal rules, a gift card cannot be sold with an expiration date less than five years from issue, and inactivity fees are not allowed in the first 12 months (CFPB). Some states are stricter. This is general information, not legal advice; check your state's rules before you set terms.
Selling them online
Most people buy gift certificates on their phone, late, a few days before they need them. If your only option is "DM us", you lose most of those sales.
- Use your existing tools. Online store and payment tools such as Square, Squarespace and Shopify offer digital gift cards that are emailed instantly. Many booking apps can also sell them; check yours before adding another tool.
- Offer instant digital delivery plus an optional printed card for pick-up. Last-minute buyers want the digital version.
- Put a "Gift certificates" link in your Instagram bio and on your homepage from mid-November to the end of December.
A simple Black Friday offer
Discounting tattoos cheapens your work. Adding value to certificates does not. One offer, repeated everywhere:
"Black Friday to Cyber Monday only: buy a $200 gift certificate, get a $25 bonus certificate for yourself."
Use your own amounts. The bonus brings the buyer back as a client too, and the offer has a clear end date (Monday, November 30, 2026), which is what makes people act.
Promote from Black Friday to Christmas
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Nov 20 to 26 | Tease the Black Friday offer in stories; email past clients |
| Nov 27 to 30 | Run the offer; post daily; small local ad budget |
| Dec 1 to 17 | "Last day for printed certificates" countdown |
| Dec 18 to 24 | Push instant digital certificates for last-minute buyers |
For ads, target people near your studio and your past clients. Gift buyers do not need to be tattooed themselves; show the certificate as a gift, not just the tattoo. More campaign ideas are in tattoo advertising ideas.
Turn every certificate into a booking
A certificate sitting in a drawer is not a client yet. Treat each one as a lead:
- Ask for the recipient's name and email or Instagram handle at purchase (optional, but most buyers give it).
- In January, message every recipient who has not booked: "You have a [studio] gift certificate waiting. Here is how to book a consult."
- Let the certificate cover the deposit, so booking feels free.
- Send one last reminder before your spring rush.
FAQ
How much should a tattoo gift certificate be?
Enough to cover at least a small tattoo at the studio, so usually the shop minimum or more. Many studios offer set amounts, such as their minimum, about an hour of work and a half-day session, plus a custom amount.
What is a good gift for someone who loves tattoos?
A gift certificate from their favorite studio or artist is the safest choice, because they choose the design, size and date. Pair it with the studio's aftercare products or a print of the artist's flash for a physical gift.
Do tattoo gift certificates expire?
Under US federal rules, gift cards cannot be sold with an expiration date less than five years from the date they are issued. Some states give more protection. Check your state's rules and print the date clearly.
Can a tattoo gift certificate be used for a deposit?
It depends on the studio, but letting it cover the deposit is the best practice: it removes the main reason recipients put off booking.
